Digitisation Projects

Caricature Project - Trinity College Dublin

Digitising 18th and early 19th century political cartoons. This project required high-level preservation scans at 400 DPI, as well as ICC profiling. The specifications followed the Oxford Digital Library standard for digital imaging. Access images were output, alongside thumbnails.

National Student registers -

National College of Art and Design ( NCAD)

This project involved the Digitisation of 12,000 pages of manuscript Student Registers, with over 130,000 records (3.5 million characters). The images were captured using a Bookeye ® digital array at 300 DPI preservation standard. Access images were then output at 150DPI for use internally and for the internet. Index data capture was carried out by IIM. This material was especially complex as much of it consisted of daily attendance registers, where names had to be captured from signatures. Moreover a significant portion (around 8%) were written using Irish script.

Griffith's Primary Valuation Project -

The National Library

Eneclann, working in partnership with OMS Services in the UK, digitised over 30,000 pages of typed and handwritten archival material, dating from 1847 to 1864, containing 1.4 million entries. The project ran from 2002 to 2003 and took 9 months to complete from identifying source material through imaging, full indexation of entries, and commercial publication online at www.irishorigins.com

The scanned images were 1-bit (bitonal) captured from new 35mm microfilm generated by the National Library. The images (right) were saved as TIF files using CCITT Group IV compression (54Kb).

Ireland's Memorial Records -Irish Genealogy Ltd.

Eneclann was commissioned in partnership with Irish Genealogy Ltd. to produce a CD Rom of Ireland's Memorial Records , World War I, 1914-1918

The original collection was compiled by the Committee of the Irish National War Memorial and contains in eight volumes a record of over 49,000 Irishmen who lost their lives in World War I.

The CD Rom Publication includes All eight volumes of the original Publication with scanned images of every page. The Names and addresses of the 49,000 individuals who died are fully searchable by different category. The CD can be purchased at the Eneclann Shop.

The images (right) were captured at 300 DPI 8-bit (grey scale) saved as 1-bit TIF files using CCITT Group IV compression (193Kb).

Testamentary Index -National Archives

Eneclann employed a team of three archivists to create a digital index of over 70,000 testamentary (wills) and related records at the National Archives with the intention of publishing this index on CD-ROM for resale. The project was completed in 8 months, and the resulting CD-ROM has sold in excess of 4,000 copies worldwide.  The CD-Rom can be purchased at the Eneclann shop.

Archive CD Books Project -

Trinity College Dublin Library

Eneclann has an agreement with Trinity College Library enabling us to digitise any books outside copyright held by that library. The material is being imaged using our safe overhead digital array scanner generating preservation quality images. These are then converted to a suitable format for publication on CD-ROM, during which process they are made fully searchable.
For further information see: www.archivecdbooks.ie

For the project the images are captured at 300-400 DPI 24-bit (full colour) or 8-bit (grey scale) and saved as 24 or 8-bit uncompressed TIF files. The sample (right) is saved as a JPG with 70% compression (705Kb).

Estate Map Project - Westmeath Archives

Eneclann was contracted to digitise over 140 unique estate maps dating from the early nineteenth century. The maps (often multi-page items) were imaged using our overhead digital array (an A2 Bookeye from Imageware) with no UV or Infra-red light to ensure the safety of the records. Preservation quality images were created, as well as lower grade images for publication on CD-ROM and online.

The material was then fully data-based by our archivists for integration with the client’s website, and for use on the CD-ROM. Eneclann then produced a CD-ROM of this material for distribution within the Westmeath library network. This project was completed within tight timeframes and budgets.

For this project the images were captured at 300 DPI 24-bit (full colour) and saved as 24-bit uncompressed TIF files. The sample (right) is saved as JPG with 70% compression (1,131Kb).

Pilot Project - Valuation Office

Eneclann was engaged to conduct a pilot project on the digitisation and indexation of the historical records of the Valuation Office.

All the material was handwritten with many revision marks, crossed out amendments, etc., making indexation quite complex. The original material used colour coding so had to be imaged at high resolution (400 DPI) in full colour. As it was priceless archival material the imaging systems had to be free of UV and Infra-red light, and imaged from above with appropriate book cradles. Over 5,000 entries were carried out for this pilot.

For this project images were captured at 300 DPI 24-bit (full colour) and saved as 24-bit uncompressed TIF files. The sample (right) is saved as JPG with 70% compression (737Kb).
